Words & Beyond

A visual music installation featuring percussion, vocalist and dancer; a collaboration with composer Seung-Ah Oh and lighting artist Ji-Young Chae. 

Words & Beyond: Hwang Jin-Yi finds inspiration in the life and poetry of one of the most famous courtesans to have lived in 16th-century Korea. She was a woman from the lower classes who, against all odds, managed to work her way into a world of literary aristocrats and powerful politicians using her sensual and flamboyant lifestyle. However, she died without ever fulfilling her greatest wish (to have a family and serve her husband), and her age and place of death remain unknown. Hwang Jin-Yi escaped the confines of normal life to become an enlightened thinker, whose ideas still appeal to the imagination in the 21st century.
